Short answer: G2/L2 is a directional chevron traction tread for graders and loaders. We carry the Sentry Tire Duramax G2/L2 in 13.00-24 and 14.00-24 (16 ply) and 23.5-25 (16 ply or 20 ply). All are tubeless. Some listings are one tire and some are a set of four, so check before you order. Replace the rear tandem tires as a matched set.

Motor graders are precision machines. The operator is trying to cut a road or pad to grade, sometimes within a fraction of an inch, while pulling a heavy blade through dirt and gravel. The tires are a big part of whether that works. A grader that slips, wanders or bounces leaves a bad finish.

We carry Sentry Tire Duramax G2/L2 tires for graders and loaders on our G2/L2 pneumatic tire page. Here is what G2/L2 means, what these tires are built for, the sizes and quantities we sell, and how to approach replacing them.

What G2/L2 means

G2 and L2 are off-the-road tire designations. G stands for grader service. L stands for loader service. The 2 indicates a traction tread. A tire marked G2/L2 is a traction pattern rated for graders and loaders.

Compare that with the E3/L3 rock tread covered in a separate post. E3/L3 is built around rock lug traction and cut resistance on loaders and earthmovers. G2/L2 is a traction pattern common on graders, where pulling power and steady tracking come first.

All are tubeless. The 13.00-24 and 14.00-24 fit a 24 inch rim. The 23.5-25 fits a 25 inch rim.

Watch the quantity. Some listings are a single tire and some are a set of four. Read the product name before you add to cart so you get the count you need.

What our product pages say

According to our product pages, the Duramax G2/L2 tires have:

  • An aggressive chevron tread designed to withstand rugged terrain.
  • A directional tread pattern for excellent power transfer.
  • A heavy duty compound that allows for larger loads, which the pages describe as ideal for loaders and graders.
  • Easy mounting on your existing wheels.
  • A tubeless design.

On a grader, the directional chevron is the key feature. It helps put power to the ground when the blade is loaded. That is exactly when a grader is most likely to slip.

Why graders need matched tires

Graders are unusual machines. Most run six tires: two steering tires up front and four drive tires on tandems in the rear. The tandems work together. Mismatched rear tires can make one tire scrub, the tandem work unevenly, and the machine pull to one side. You will see it in the finish.

What we recommend:

  • Replace the rear tires as a set. That is part of why we sell the 14.00-24 and the 23.5-25 20 ply in sets of four.
  • Keep tread and ply matched across each axle.
  • Check rolling circumference if you are mixing new and used tires. Different wear means different diameters.

Directional tires: mount them correctly

G2/L2 tires have a directional tread, so they have to be mounted with the correct rotation. On a grader, that means paying attention to which side of the machine each tire goes on. Follow the direction markings on the sidewall. Backward chevrons cost you traction and wear the tread oddly.

16 ply or 20 ply 23.5-25?

We carry the 23.5-25 G2/L2 in both 16 ply and 20 ply. The 20 ply has a stronger casing for heavier loads. The right one depends on your machine and what it carries. Loaders running heavy material often need the higher ply rating. Check your current tire and your equipment specification.

Ply rating on 13.00-24 and 14.00-24

Both are 16 ply. Match or exceed what your machine calls for.

Mounting large tubeless tires

These are large OTR tires on multi-piece rims. Have them mounted by trained tire technicians with proper equipment and safety cages. Before mounting:

1. Inspect rim components for cracks and wear.

2. Replace O-rings and valve hardware.

3. Clean the bead seats.

4. Follow safe inflation procedures.

This is not a job to rush at the end of a shift.

Signs grader tires need replacing

  • Slipping under a loaded blade that was not happening before.
  • Worn chevrons with little lug height left.
  • Cuts and sidewall damage from rock and curbs.
  • Uneven wear across the tandems, which can point to a mismatched set or pressure differences.
  • Repeated air loss.

Solid tire and wheel options for 13.00-24 and 14.00-24

If flats are a constant issue, we also list solid tires on wheels in these sizes, including the 13.00x24 V2D Solid Tire with Deflectors on a Black Steel Wheel and the 14.00x24 V2D non-marking version. These are assemblies with a specific wheel offset and bolt hole count, so fitment has to be confirmed for your machine. Call us before ordering.

Grader tire care between replacements

Grader tires can last a long time when they are looked after. The habits that matter most:

  • Keep pressures even across the tandems. If one tire is lower, it carries less load and the others carry more. That means uneven wear and a machine that does not track the way the operator expects.
  • Inspect after rough jobs. After a rocky haul road or a demolition site, walk around the machine. Look for cuts, embedded rock and sidewall damage.
  • Do not let the tires spin. Spinning on hard ground or loose rock wears the chevrons fast. If the machine is slipping, lighten the cut or make another pass.
  • Watch the front tires. The front steering tires get less attention because they do not drive. They still carry weight and take hits from the blade and windrows.
  • Store graders out of the sun when possible. Many graders, especially in municipal fleets, sit for long stretches between jobs. Sun and ozone age rubber. Covered storage helps.

Who buys grader tires from us

Our grader tire customers include county and city road departments, contractors who build and maintain roads and pads, mining and aggregate operations with haul roads to keep up, and equipment dealers and rental companies. The goal is the same for all of them. A grader that pulls the blade without slipping and leaves a clean finish.

Single tires or a set of four?

If you have one damaged tire and the rest are nearly new, a single tire may be the right call. The replacement has to be the same size, ply and tread, and the wear difference has to be small. If the other tires are already well worn, buy the set. It keeps the tandems matched, keeps the machine level, and keeps you off the phone ordering another tire in a few months.

FAQ
